St. Patrick's Day Explained!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! You may know that today is typically filled with green outfits, Irish music, and shamrocks as far as the eye can see...but what is this holiday really about?

Saint Patrick was a real person back in the 5th century! He was a missionary who helped bring Christianity to Ireland, and is named the patron Saint of Ireland. It is said that Saint Patrick used the visual of a shamrock to describe the holy trinity when teaching others about Christianity. Members of the Catholic Church celebrate the day as a religious holiday, and in Ireland it’s actually included in their calendar of public holidays.

Over the years the tone of St. Patrick’s Day has also shifted to become a celebration of Irish culture and is recognized in many parts of the world. In America, Irish-Americans and many non-Irish celebrate the holiday as well. In 1762, New York City held their first ever St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which is still a staple to this day! Other cities, like Chicago, have also really embraced the holiday. Chicago even traditionally dyes their river green in celebration!
