Q&A With Our New Assistant Director Carly
After an exhaustive search, we are so excited to share that we found an absolutely amazing new Assistant Director. Say hello to Carly Merrill! She is charismatic, passionate and has a sensational work ethic. We couldn't be happier to have her on our YC Team!
Since today is our first day open for kids(finally!) we thought our members might want to get the inside scoop on our new AD prior to walking through the doors. So we decided to do a little Q&A session...
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the area! I went to Glens Falls until fourth grade when my family moved to Queensbury, and I stayed there until I graduated in ‘09!
What do you love most about this area?
I love how we are quite literally a short drive away from so many things. On any given day you could drive to NYC for the afternoon, or head a few hours north and hike in the high peaks region. There are endless possibilities. We are so lucky to live in a community that always has something to do. I know 2020 is a little different, but typically you can find me at several fairs, festivals, and events every single week!
What are three interesting facts about yourself?
-I have a degree in Musical Theatre so I’ve spent most of my life on stage singing, dancing, and acting.
-I have a rescue pup named Hadley, and she’s the BEST. In our free time we love to hike, and swim, and snack together.
-My family is super close, and I’m lucky to count my sister and parents as some of my best friends!
Why did you want to work at the YC?
So I came to the YC straight off of 9 years with Six Flags the Great Escape. I started there as a dancer and host of their children’s shows, eventually worked my way up to the full-time team where I spent a few years overseeing the Entertainment and Events department, and most recently made my home on the HR team as the head of Training and Development. I loved my time with Six Flags because it was a way for me to interact with our community, but once I started learning about everything the YC has to offer, I realized this is an even better place for me to actually be a part of our community. In every job I’ve ever had my favorite aspects have always involved people, whether that’s entertaining people, helping them, befriending them...and I could not be more ready to get to know every single member at the YC!
Favorite ice cream?
Alright, it’s a doozy: a small cone with Orange Cream Twist from Martha’s, with blue raspberry shell dip, rainbow sprinkles...then you take the whole thing and put it upside down in a dish and eat it with a spoon. Trust me on this.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Nachos. The world’s perfect food.
I played softball for 11 years, so I love baseball! NY Yankees all the way!
What type of music do you listen to?
I’m a musical nerd and LIVE for cast recordings of Broadway shows. But my favorite band is Lake Street Dive and I go to any show they play in the area!
What YC game will be your specialty?
Charades. This theatre kid is ready to take on everyone for the title of charades master.
Is there anything that you want our kids to know before they meet you?
Kindness is really the key for me, and I work every day to be kind to those around me. We all make mistakes, go through rough times, and have hard days, but we can still treat each other with respect and kindness!
