Continuing a Legacy of Love
On June 13 we lost the man who molded the Youth Center into the amazing facility that is today. My father, Matt Congdon, was the pillar of this organization. He spent 36 out of his 60 years on this Earth trying to make an impact in the lives of the children in this community. There is no doubt that he succeeded.
He would be the first to tell you that he lived a spectacular life surrounded by loving family and dear friends. Despite all of his hardships health-wise, he trusted in God and took on each new challenge with optimism and a fabulous sense of humor. He always managed to find light within the darkness, and that never ceased to inspire everyone around him.
Personally, I will miss listening to him singing an Irish tune while swaying back and forth in a rocking chair; his quick, sarcastic wit; playing against him in heated rounds of Jeopardy; talking basketball; his guidance; and that mischievous twinkle he would get in his eye, followed by his contagious smile.
He was a true warrior and showed us that nothing is impossible. I am so incredibly proud to be his daughter and to continue his legacy at the Youth Center.
His spirit, strength and selflessness will never be forgotten.
This summer was a transitional period for us at the Youth Center. A time to cope with the sadness as well as appreciate the beauty in the brevity of life. And somehow, bit by bit, we began to heal from our heartache.
A new school year is about to commence and, even though Matt won't be there to greet members at the door as they shuffle in after a hectic first day, he will be there in spirit, serving as a guidepost, forever and always.
I would like to thank every child, parent, teacher, board member, business owner and the community as a whole for rallying around our staff, this organization and my family for the last few months. It made all the difference and I was truly touched by every message, card, phone call and visit.
I’m really excited for this next chapter for the Youth Center and I hope that all of you are too! Thank you so much for your support!
